This week I as asked to do a business motion ( it could be fun or serious ). I chose to be controversial in my motion. My motion went as such:

I would like to make a motion to implement a Speaking out of Turn penalty that would be policed by our Sergeant at Arms.

My motion passed, but there was a learning lesson in this exercise. I learned that a phrase that starts with "I would like" is not firm. It is actually futuristic. Our parliamentarian actually said he told someone once that it was great that they were making a motion, and to let him know when they are ready to do so.

When making a motion it needs to be more definite and firm. I should have said the following:

I motion to implement a Speaking out of Turn penalty that would be policed by our Sergeant at Arms.

Needless to say, I learned this week how to make a motion properly, and I learned how to make an argument for or against a motion.

I am not sure if I will have a chance to use this in real life, but I will now be prepared.
